Ransom Riggs’ Peculiar Children Series

“I used to dream about escaping my ordinary life, but my life was never ordinary. I had simply failed to notice how extraordinary it was.”

See those up there?↑ ↑ ↑ Who would buy a book with a book cover looking as disturbing as those?

Yes, I judge the book by its cover.

(even if I am not a judge, Melanie)

Those up there, are the major reasons why for many a times these books were suggested to me at the book store, many a times, I have declined. Well it did pique interest but the photos were just too creepy for me.

So who or what changed my mind? Fox did.

Fox Movies is coming out with a movie based on the novel. Tim Burton directs the film. It will be shown in theaters, on September 30, 2016. ? I saw the trailer at the movie house last time. It was while watching XMen Apocalypse.

Funny but Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children seem to be the retro version of Dr. Xavier’s School for the Gifted.

The trailer was not as eerie, as the book cover projected the story to be. The movie trailer was interesting enough —to convince me that I should read the books. Fox is influential to me, like that. ( ?? what did the fox say, ningningning??)

And of course after I read the first book, Mrs. Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children,

I had to read the remaining two: Hollow City and Library of Souls.

The Photographs

The photographs on the books were the groundwork for Ransom Riggs’ Peculiar Children Series. The strange photos are collections of the author.

At first, the author wanted to publish his vintage photo collections, on a coffee-table type of book.

But since he was fascinated with them and the story behind each photo, ( while somebody told him to make a story out of it), he opted to write ABOUT them.

He perfectly fitted a unifying story for all these pictures. Some photos were taken as it is, while the others were digitally manipulated. Thus began the story, about the peculiar children (and adults).

The Characters

Miss Alma Peregrine

She is the “ymbryne” who manages the time loop. She is the headmistress of the school for peculiar children.

*ymbrine- a peculiar adult that could change into birds

Jacob Portman

The sixteen year old boy who after his grandfather’s death, discovered that the extraordinary stories and the strange photos his grandfather used to talk about might just be actually real.

Emma Bloom

The young woman who can create fire with her hands. She is also Jacob’s love interest.

Then there is Bronwyn, a very strong peculiar girl. Millard a peculiar boy who has the power of invisibility and Olive a peculiar girl who can float in air.

The Story

Jacob Portman journeys to an island off the coast of Wales, to see for himself, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children .

His grandfather used to tell him, stories about it and the children who lived there.

Jacob wanted to know if it did really existed. As he arrived on the island he came upon the ruins of the house. But Jacob’s discovery of the ruins was just the beginning of his life as a peculiar child with extraordinary abilities.

I was excited to tell my son the story. (I forgot that he could read these books, if he wanted too)

I might just be too excited to talk about the books, I might spill it all here.

So for now, if you do want to read young adult books filled with adventure, young romance and heroism, this story could be for you.
