"Love Me, Love My Dog"

Once, I saw a shirt with an idiomatic expression in latin, ” Qui me amat, amat et canem meum ” , ( ” The one who loves me, loves my dog too. ” )

or, as we all know it as, ” Love me, love my dog. ” ( an idiomatic expression for, ” love me for everything that I am. ” )

And that shirt, would most definitely look good on CHARDY ANG:

So, I had to ask him ten questions.

1. What was the first pet you took care of?

A dog. A Rottweiler.

2. When did you start taking care of dogs?

While I was in grade school, I took care of some dogs already. However though, when I was about twenty-one, I ventured into the business of breeding dogs, for added earnings. But of course, although I own a car business, I run a hardware and I own a commercial building with units for lease, -I am a dog lover, first and foremost. Therefore, it did not feel right, for me to sell dogs and earn from them. And so, I stopped using dogs for business and started training them.

3. How many dogs you have right now? And what are their names?

I have three border collies namely, Cheska, Yuri, and Andy. I have one jack russell, named Skye. And I have one aspin, named Ahww.

4. Describe your love for your dogs.

Right now, no words can exactly describe how I feel for them. Or how much I love them. But one time when someone made a nasty joke about, ” my dog for pulutan “, I gave him a dagger look which I think, could wound him mortally.

5. How do you take care of them?

I am a hands-on-owner. I make sure that I not only do the training, but I do all the grooming and feeding. I am the one who feeds them. I do all the work, especially picking up their poop and cleaning their potty area. In addition to that, all my four dogs have their own comfort rooms which makes cleaning easier .

6. How do you train your dogs ?

I started with conventional methods, I began reading books and then after a bit of research, I came across BETTERDOG.

7. What is BETTERDOG? ( BetterDog Canine Behavior Center )

It is a school for dogs and dog owners. It was established by Jojo Isorena whom I consider my mentor. I learned a lot from BetterDog for they taught me how to educate my dogs and build better relationships with them.

8. What competitions have you joined?

I have joined many, to date. But it is my first competition, which was held in Cebu City, that gave me mixed emotion. I was happy and excited at the same time. It was like a kick in the chest. And soon enough, my dogs and I started joining competitions already.

My dog, CHESKA , placed 3rd in a competition held in Cebu City, last May 5.

While SKYE, won 3rd place at Davao City, last May 12.

In the recent concluded 7th Bacolod National Dog Agility Competition, last October 20, 2012 , all my three dogs passed B.A. Canine Life and Social Skills (C.L.A.S.S.) with honors and they reaped awards too:

SKYE:

CHAMPION, 1st Advanced Class, Standard Agility
(Small Dogs, 16 inches and below)

3rd PLACE, Starters Class, Standard Agility
(Small Dogs, 16 inches and below)

YURI:

3rd PLACE, Advanced Class, Standard Agility
(Large Dogs, 22 inches and below)

3rd PLACE, Trick-style

CHESKA

2nd PLACE, Disc Dog Championship, Distance/Accuracy

And apart from the accolades, there are perks too:

My dog SKYE, starred in two television commercial advertisements, one for Ariel powder detergent and the other for PLDT‘s Ana Banana. I was invited twice for television guestings; one for Umagang Kay Ganda and the other one for Unang Hirit. I recently won in a talent contest which will be aired soon.

9. How old should kids have pets? ( or dogs most specifically? )

Kids can have pets anytime they want. As long as their parents, being the grown-ups themselves, guide their children in taking care of their pets. But they should also, do some research of course, before getting a pet. Find a pet that would fit your lifestyle and your family.

Same goes, with choosing dogs for pets.

Do some research on the type of dog, that you have, or join a community and seek some help, like that with BetterDog, so the right care, given to them, will be near to precise. Having pets, especially dogs, requires close monitoring.

10. What principles and lessons have you learned, while taking care of dogs or with pets in general?( And any advice you could give, to those who are still in the process of training their dogs?)

Never think of having dogs, as adhering to the status quo. Or sadly, parade them around or show off your expensive dogs. You should have dogs as pets all because you love dogs. And not for anything else. Our dogs, would love us, more than we could ever love them, or more than they would love their own selves. In training my dogs and teaching them tricks, I try not to pressure either myself or my dogs. I take everything slowly, one step at a time. Eventually, my dogs became confident and they happily do their tasks and tricks. ” Patience is a virtue, especially with dogs, for good things will come to you, if you are patient. ”
